Rotary Club of Livermore Valley ~ July 2022 Newsletter
President's Message

Our Rotary International President Jennifer Jones begins her leadership year with an invitation for each of us to “Imagine Rotary.” As a fellow Canadian, I will accept her invitation, and ask that our club members join me. Let’s imagine what Rotary can achieve at an international level. And let’s imagine the possibilities for our club. Beyond that, and perhaps more important, let’s implement those ideas to improve our community and our world.

As I begin my year as president, I take very seriously the job of leading our club forward. You may already know that I am someone who listens, that I’m a numbers person, and that I like to be active. Put those together, and you have a president focused on collaboration, data, and action. I look forward to our coming year together, and to imagining the Rotary Club of Livermore Valley as the best club it can be!

To begin our work for the 2022-23 year, I invite you to imagine what our club can accomplish. What do we want to be known for? What makes our club worth belonging to?

Let’s see where our imaginations can take us!

Kevin McCallum
President
Student of the Month

Anusri Saraf, pictured above, is the Granada High School Class of 2022 Valedictorian and our June Student of the Month.

Principal Matthew Hart introduced Anusri to us as Granada’s “complete renaissance student.” Her cumulative high school GPA of 4.74 exemplifies her academic excellence. She has completed numerous Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses, preparing her for success beyond high school.

In addition to academics, Anusri plays violin in the GHS orchestra and has served as class officer. She’s involved in Granada’s chess, music, and cybersecurity clubs, and in GHS UNICEF.

She teaches coding to underprivileged children around the world through the company Geeklama. She volunteers at the library and at blood drives. She belongs to Toastmasters International, and has earned their Advanced Communication Gold award. She’s a Bharatnatyam dancer, and she writes poetry and short stories.

Demotion Festivities

Angelika Voss-Quinn led our club in the achievement of all of our Rotary goals last year! We donated more hours of service and funding than ever before, and we brought in more new members than any other club in our Area!

We celebrated our Energizer President and thanked her for an awesome year during our annual demotion dinner on June 22. We had a great turnout for dinner in Sarah Palmer's park-like backyard. And we enjoyed live music by our own Jerry Hawkins.

Thank you, Angelika, for your year of leadership and service!
We wish you and Peter the best!

Rotarians of the Year 2022
Each year members of our club recognize an outstanding member who has gone above and beyond in contributing time and effort to the success of our club during the past year. Celebrating the Rotarian of the Year also celebrates the tradition of service begun by our first club president, Bill Webster. This award honors and remembers Bill, while honoring a current member of our club. Occasionally, the award is presented to two deserving members.

The  award was presented by Sherri Simoni, the 2021 Rotarian of the Year.

Sherri read us the story that exemplifies the spirit of giving that this award honors.

For 2022, club members Kevin McCallum and Philomena Rambo share the honor of being named Rotarians of the Year.
Congratulations!

Both Kevin and Philomena contributed many hours to helping our club accomplish its goals. The two of them were co-producers of our hybrid meetings, with Kevin managing the room set-up and Philomena facilitating the zoom elements of the meetings. They worked together on many projects in our club and with the Rotarian Foundation.

When they aren't wearing their Rotary hats, you might find them outside enjoying the sunshine.

Ukraine Still Needs Our Help
As global citizens and members of Rotary, we are deeply saddened by the suffering of individuals in Ukraine, brought on by the military aggression of Vladimir Putin. There are opportunities within Rotary, as well as elsewhere, to donate to support this care and relief.
