We are proud to join with our fellow Livermore Rotarians and the Rotarian Foundation of Livermore to purchase and deliver hardcover children’s literature to each 3rd and 4th grade student in the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District! Rotarians are invited to deliver books in person to students at their schools, April 19 - April 29.

After months of collaboration by local teachers, librarians, administrators, and Rotarians, we have selected 3 titles at each grade level from which students can select their favorite book. We will provide a gift of reading to students this spring!
Research has shown that students who are fluent readers by the end of third grade are prepared to succeed academically. On the other hand, students who struggle in reading at the end of third grade are set up to struggle academically. During primary years, students learn to read. Once they enter fourth grade, they read to learn. They need that strong foundation of reading skills in order to be successful learners of all subjects.
Educators, as well as the avid readers among us, know that reading an engaging story or article will encourage more reading. The books we will give to students in April 2022 will be read and discussed during classroom book groups. The titles have been selected with varied interests in mind, so that each student can choose their favorite type of book. School librarians will introduce the titles so that the students will have a preview of each book's storyline.
We are grateful to partner with Towne Center Books to purchase lasting hardcover editions that the children can read and reread and add to their home libraries.
YOU'RE INVITED TO HELP DELIVER THE BOOKS!
Rotarians are invited to deliver books in person to students at their schools, April 19th - April 29th. Please use this form to sign up for your preferred time(s): Gift of Reading Book Delivery Sign Up Form.
We will hand each student their book of choice, accompanied by a book mark and a personalized bookplate that we will help them place in their new book.
Note: Because of the reduction of COVID in our community, LVJUSD no longer requires volunteers to show proof of COVID vaccination. Additionally, we will be able to volunteer for this project without having to complete additional volunteer forms. (We had previously been told that volunteers needed to complete the online application, but that is no longer required since our time at each school will be short.)
Thank you for being a part of this project!
