Today's speaker was Bob Jacobs, a local attorney who was previously a Rotarian with noon club here to speak with us about an 18 month mission he and his wife did in Ghana, West Africa.
Four years ago he and his wife, Jerie decided to do a mission. He shut down his law business and found an opportunity through his church to use his law degree by working for the Counsel for West Africa to assist with closing real estate deals. There is no title insurance in Ghana so to see if someone owns land, you need to go into a town, and ask everyone who owns that land. If they all say the same name, then it's safe to buy it!
Jerie got involved with the local orphanage who would send their children to the library once a week to learn English skills. Unfortunately many of the kids were too hungry to pay attention so the librarians initiated a lunch program. Bob and Jerie still support this program which is ongoing four years later.
The economy in Ghana was very depressed due to the currency getting devalued. Bob described many of the locals most of whom were very poor yet found many ways to sell anything imaginable carrying their inventory on their heads. Despite the poverty, everyone's spirit was happy and positive. There was no suicide or depression.
Bob and Jerie had an amazing, fantastic experience. Everyone in Ghana treated them and each other so well. If you would like more information on this incredible trip, visit Bob's blog Underafricanskies.
