APRIL STUDENT OF THE MONTH
Principal Clark Conover introduced Brooke Bennett and her mother.  Brooke is a Varsity swimmer from Granada High School.  She gets up at 4am every morning to train in the pool amounting to 25 hours/week!  She also manages a very tough school load with many AP courses and has a 4.43 GPA! Her teachers remark that she is extremely kind and finds the time to tutor other students.  Brooke will be heading to the University of Georgia where she will be swimming in Division 1 this fall. 
 
TODAY'S PROGRAM: TRI-VALLEY CONSERVANCY
Mony Nop introduced Rebecca Spector, Executive Director and Diana
Roberts Conservation Manager from Tri-Valley Conservancy.

Tri-Valley Conservancy Presentation – Key Highlights

The Tri-Valley Conservancy shared an overview of its work preserving open space, agriculture, and habitat across the Tri-Valley region.
  • Land Conservancy efforts: Over 6,100 acres protected to date, including approximately 3,100 acres of agriculture and 1,800 acres of habitat.
  • Priority areas: Expansion efforts focus on vineyards, open space, and wildlife habitat.
  • Conservation tools:
    • Use of perpetual conservation easements to permanently restrict development
    • Purchase of development rights to preserve agricultural land
    • Agreements are customized for each property
    • Agricultural structures are allowed, but subdivisions are prohibited
  • Current impact:
    • 114 properties under conservation agreements
    • All properties are monitored annually
    • Most recent project: 1,350 acres in Doolan Canyon placed under easement, with plans for future public recreation access

Agriculture & Vineyard Support

  • Provides low-interest loans (15-year terms) to support vineyard replanting
    • Recent projects include Thatcher Bay and Concannon Vineyard
  • Encourages sustainable practices:
    • Owl boxes (built by local Boy Scouts) to naturally control rodents
    • Pollinator habitats to support butterflies and biodiversity

Community & Education Programs

  • Youth in Nature Program:
    • Serves 7,000+ 4th graders
    • Reaches all schools in Livermore and Pleasanton
  • Community engagement:
    • Sponsor of the Wild and Scenic Film Festival
    • Hosts the “Views of the Valley” photo competition

Organizational Background

  • Originally formed following the Ruby Hill settlement, which preserved 3,300 acres of mitigation land
  • Governed by a 5-member appointed board
  • Expanded from South Livermore to become the Tri-Valley Conservancy
  • Funding:
    • Original settlement funds restricted to South Livermore
    • Ongoing work supported through fundraising and grants
    • Additional support from sources like the Altamont Open Space Fund

Questions Answered

  • Conservation easements are permanent and attached to property deeds
  • Tax incentives help encourage landowners to participate
  • In areas such as Tesla Road, development is limited (e.g., ~10% buildable) to protect open space
  • Loan program applies to parcels 8–50 acres

RFL 2026 Community Grant Awards Event

Rotarians are invited to celebrate the community organizations that are recipients of the 2026 Rotarian Foundation of Livermore Community Grants. The celebration will be held Wednesday, April 29, 3:00 - 4:30 pm, at Del Valle Winery, 4948 Tesla Rd, Livermore.

Admission is free. Rotarians are asked to purchase their own wine to enjoy during the celebration.

This year, the Rotarian Foundation of Livermore is awarding over $230,000 to support 26 community organizations. We look forward to celebrating these outstanding groups.

Spring Grant Applications Invited
 
 
We encourage non-profit community organizations and educators whose work aligns with our mission as Rotarians to apply for a grant of up to $1,000. We are grateful to be able to extend our reach into the community by partnering with our grant recipients.
