Kevin McCullum has stepped up to take over Past President duties. Kevin is requesting nominations for the president for the 2025/2026 year. He is hoping to get three nominees.
Lori Souza reported on the Football Follies Thanks to participants for their buy-in: Football Follies has raised $1,500 that we will use to help fund our annual Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner Project that supports local families.
Lori also announced that the World Series Pool starts on Friday. $20/square. It's the NY Yankees versus the LA Dodgers. The money raised ($1000) will go towards our Thanksgiving dinner gifts to our community's most deserving families.
Noon club is challenging us to compete with them in a November beard growers contest. Entrants (and females are included!) get donations for the beard growing contest in support ofRooms of Hope. Kick off is on November 2 at the First Street Ale House.
Lori updated us on Football Follies. Ed Schumann is in the lead, with Kevin McCallum & Eric Dillie tied for Second Place. This past week, Ed, Eric, and Jerry Hawkins all had perfect scores!
Beth encouraged us to sign up for the October Social at Honeycomb Cocktail Lounge, Tuesday, October 29, at Livermore's newest "speakeasy." See the Event listing below or check your email to find the registration link. Space is limited to 65 people!
We welcomed Dr. David Rakestraw, from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, who discussed and demonstrated some of the unknown capabilities of the iPhone as a tool for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education. Dave partially retired from LLNL and became a science high school math teach to help bring enthusiasm for science into the classroom He found to engage students they needed to experiment and investigate. Since everyone has a cell phone, he was able to harness the capabilities and power of cell phones to do science experiments. Another huge benefit of this approach is that every student is conducting their own experiment and no one is just watching or sitting out.
One of the capabilities of the cellphone is being able to measure the movement of your heart. In fact it is so accurate that Dave self diagnosed Atrial Fibrillation and went to a hospital where they verified his diagnosis. (Luckily he's ok now!) The doctors were all amazed that Dave was able use his cell phone to capture this data to make this determination. Here is a link to Dave's presentation.
Dave now spends a lot of time training other teachers. There is a free app, phyphox which you can download to get access to the raw data that your phone generates!
