President Beth McCormick will lead us in our first club assembly of the 2024-25 Rotary Year, celebrating the theme, "The Magic of Rotary." All members are encouraged to attend and participate in this launch of the new year.

Members and guests are invited to our Tuesday club meeting, held weekly at Las Positas College, 3000 Campus Hill Drive, Livermore, in the Horticulture Building, 3300. We gather at 8:00, ring the bell at 8:15, and adjourn at 9:15 am.

Melanie is a driving evaluator who specializes in evaluating older drivers and their skillsets. She is a Licensed Driving Instructor and Driver Rehabilitation Professional (DRP).  Melanie is the author of the best-selling book Difficult Aging in Place Conversations, and is a speaker on the topics of aging and driving. 

We are looking forward to hearing from her at our meeting on July 23!

We are excited to welcome the students our club sent to RYLA, the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards camp. We will hear what they learned and how they grew as young leaders. 

Huge thanks to Suzanne Richerson, our Youth Services Chair, for her leadership and guidance for these students.

Club members and RFL board members Dennis Gambs, Rich Goldstein, and Philomena Rambo, will share an overview of the Rotarian Foundation of Livermore and answer any questions members may have. The RFL is the 501(c)(3) organization that is shared by our club and the noon club. Together, we run the RFL and guide its generous support of our community.

Any red badgers should plan on attending this meeting to meet a Blue Badge requirement. All others will enjoy the refresher.

Fellow Rotarian John Freeman is inviting us to be part of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) Training that will simulate the response to a major emergency in our area. 

The event takes place at Robert Livermore Community Center (RLCC), 4444 East Ave, Livermore on Wednesday, August 14, from 8:30 - 3:00. Training, lunch (provided), and the simulation will all take place at RLCC.

We welcome back our partner and Alameda County Master Gardener Laura Cornett, who will give us a tour of LPC's Horticulture Center. 

Fellow Rotarian and Rotary Foundation Chair George Wineinger will provide us with an overview of the amazing work of the Rotary Foundation. The nonprofit arm of Rotary International, the Rotary Foundation has a global reach of support and service.

We will walk across the parking lot to meet in the new Viticulture Facility and learn from David Bramlett about the Viticulture Program at Las Positas College.

All Rotarians are invited to participate in the 2024 District 5170 Avenues of Service (AOS) event. AOS provides an opportunity for clubs to showcase their projects and accomplishments, while learning from other Rotarians about ways to serve through the 5 Avenues of Service: Club, Community, Youth, Vocational, and International.

Registration will include both breakfast and lunch.

We welcome Dr. David Rakestraw, from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, who will reveal the physics behind the iPhone - Why the iPhone worked after a 15,000 foot fall! We will learn some of the unknown capabilities of the iPhone as a tool for STEM.

This month we meet at the Honeycomb Cocktail Lounge, the "speakeasy" connected to Sons of Liberty in Downtown Livermore. Wear your costume!

All members and guests are asked to pay $35 to cover the cost of food. Please register online, and you will be billed through your monthly club statement for you (and your guest).

Whiskey tastings are available for $25, payable at the bar at the event. Other drinks available for purchase, as well.

We will learn about the Shiva-Vishnu Temple and the community and cultural center that surrounds it. Our meeting will be at Las Positas College.

All community members are invited to drop off their used lithium-ion batteries and/or their devices that contain lithium-ion batteries for free recycling. Rotary club members will be at Tri-Valley Car Care from 11 am - 5 pm on Sunday, November 10 to accept your items and have them safely recycled to help our environment.

Please note: To recycle your device, the item must contain a lithium-ion battery. It must not require a plugged-in cord to operate. We only accept rechargeable items with lithium-ion batteries.

Why should you recycle lithium-ion batteries?

• Keeps end-of-life lithium-ion batteries out of landfills
• Helps increase the security of a domestic supply chain for raw battery materials
• Supports domestic remanufacturing of lithium-ion batteries
• Reduces the need to mine from the earth

Why it matters

As the world electrifies to combat climate change, lithium-ion battery demand is projected to increase by 500 percent in the coming years. These batteries will be needed for new electric vehicles and clean energy products but additionally, demand for rechargeable consumer devices is also increasing that source these same materials.

Batteries are in nearly every consumer device; from cell phones to laptops, e-bikes to scooters and electric toothbrushes to vacuum cleaners and power drills, consumer demand for rechargeable batteries is skyrocketing. And, as more electric vehicles hit our roads, we’ll need more and more batteries.

All lithium-ion batteries are made up of varying amounts of critical minerals like cobalt, copper, nickel, and lithium. Whether a laptop or an electric vehicle, lithium-ion batteries source the same elements on the periodic table. What’s perhaps even more incredible is that these metals can be recycled almost infinitely. Because metal atoms don’t degrade, recycled lithium or nickel units perform the same as newly mined material – in fact, sometimes even better! This creates a tremendous opportunity for recycling.  

This program brings us one step closer to creating a domestic, circular supply chain for all end-of-life batteries and solving the environmental impacts of new products before they happen.
